Eosinophil-Derived Neurotoxin (EDN) Levels Predict Atopic March

"EDN as an Early Predictor of the Atopic March"
  • In infants and young children with atopic dermatitis or food allergies, EDN levels can predict the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Higher EDN levels (high EDN) are associated with an increased risk of developing asthma and allergic rhinitis. Thus, EDN is an important early biomarker for the prediction of the atopic march in early childhood.

Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin reference values in asthma: The way forward

"Early Prediction of Recurrent Wheeze and Asthma Using EDN Levels"
  • In a clinical study, 73% of children with EDN levels ≥100 ng/mL developed asthma within one year, with an average of 5.7 symptom recurrences. Furthermore, when the diagnostic cutoff was set at 44.2 ng/mL, the sensitivity was 81.3% and the specificity was 87.1%, showing high diagnostic accuracy. These findings indicate that EDN levels are an important biomarker for the early prediction of asthma development.

EDN: A New Standard for Asthma Diagnosis

“EDN as the New Standard in Asthma Diagnostics”
  • The EDN diagnostic test is less costly than conventional markers and, because it is non-cationic, achieves a 100% recovery rate, ensuring accurate and stable results.
  • With a sensitivity of 81.3% and a specificity of 87.1%, the EDN diagnostic test has demonstrated superior diagnostic performance compared with ECP, FeNO, and pulmonary function tests, and is applicable across pediatric and adult populations.

Comparison of Diagnostic Methods for Asthma

EDN Diagnostic Test (Designated as New Health Technology, NHT)
  • Non-cationic; 100% recovery rate
  • EDN sensitivity: 81.3%
  • EDN specificity: 87.1%
Asthma Confirmation: Methacholine Challenge Test (MCT)
  • Requires a high level of patient cooperation
  • Not feasible for children under 7 or for many elderly patients
  • Requires specialized equipment and trained personnel
Conventional Test: ECP
  • Cationic – prone to adsorption; resulting in low recovery
  • ECP sensitivity: 68.3%
  • ECP specificity: 67.3%
  • Asthma Diagnosis: EDN is superior to ECP.
  • In children aged ≤6 years, no diagnostic method for asthma is available; EDN enables diagnosis with high accuracy.
  • In adult asthma, EDN is also superior to conventional methods and can be used for both diagnosis and monitoring.

Comparison of Asthma Severity Assessment

EDN demonstrates clearer differentiation of asthma severity than conventional biomarkers (ECP and TEC).
